Costa Pacifica crossed the Strait of Gibraltar this morning, then I had an absolutely delightful shore excursion in this United Kingdom territory – my 17th territory visited on my Quest for 243. Add the 127 countries and three de-facto nations I’ve been to and my new count is 147 (60% of the way there).
Gibraltar is one of the smallest territories or nations on Earth with just 2.5 square miles (6.5 square km) of land. That’s about 10 times the size of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Spain ceded the territory to the UK in 1713. It is also one of the least populous with just 29,461 residents.
