St. Kitts: A Delightful Tour of the Island But a
Poor Guide & Continual Appalling Service Aboard

Thanks for a fantastic afternoon and a beautiful sunset St. Kitts! I went on a four-hour sightseeing tour around the island today. Unfortunately the guide wasn’t that great, and I continue to experience abysmal customer service aboard Costa Pacifica on the third day of my cruise.

Got up at 11:27 a.m. aboard Costa Pacifica as we sailed from Catalina Island, Dominican Republic, to Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis. I’ve had horrible customer-service experiences thus far on my 17-night Caribbean and trans-Atlantic cruise, and now more fails: There was no cruise newsletter in my mail slot; had to retrieve one from reception. Then when I obtained one, the meeting times and places for excursions weren’t listed. (Not shown on my ticket either.)

I visited the tour desk, only to find it was closed. Bumped into a ship’s officer in the hallway, who rallied to get me the vital info. I’m in total disbelief at how awful this cruise has been thus far. A new low for sure.

Catalina Island, DR: A Lovely Afternoon at the
Beach But Dreadful Service Continues on Board

I swam, walked a nature trail, and enjoyed some sunny beach time this afternoon at the first port of call on my 17-night Caribbean and trans-Atlantic voyage. It was good medicine for the numerous headaches I’m dealing with aboard Costa Pacific, where the facilities and customer service have been abysmal.

Got up about 12:30 a.m. aboard Costa Pacifica in the Port of La Romana, Dominican Republic. I had arrived on board yesterday afternoon after a horrendous boarding experience, and my luggage hadn’t been delivered when I went to bed about 9 p.m. Opened my door to get my suitcase – but it’s not there!

Picked up the phone to call reception. The telephone in my cabin doesn’t work! It’s one fail after another so far for Costa Pacifica. What a nightmare!

Horrendous Experience Boarding Costa
Pacifica in La Romana, Dominican Republic

I’m aboard Costa Pacifica for a 17-night Caribbean and trans-Atlantic cruise, but what an absolute nightmare start to this 80-day global-nomad stretch that will take me across the ocean to Europe and West Africa.

Arrived at the Port of La Romana at 11 a.m. after flying into Santo Domingo (SDQ) from Orlando (MCO), shocked to find an empty pier and only 25 other passengers waiting in the terminal. Turns out the ship wasn’t scheduled to arrive until 1:30 p.m.

Staff at the open-air terminal – with no food, water, or WiFi – informed me check-in wouldn’t start until 5 p.m., 3½ hours after the ship arrives. WTF?! Who comes up with this insanity?! I couldn’t be any more infuriated. The one time I show up early and it’s a total debacle!

Tahiti Day #5: Boarding Oceania Marina in Papeete

Mom and I are aboard Oceania Marina for a 12-night “Pure Polynesia” cruise to seven other islands in this French territory that covers a huge swath of the South Pacific Ocean. Oceania made a bad first impression after we embarked, not keeping the lunch buffet open later than usual and setting up our cabin with only one bed instead of the two instructed by our travel agent. Our balcony cabin, 8071, is a massive disappointment. We were expecting a much more spacious stateroom but instead found a room of similar size to lower-class cruiselines such as MSC, Costa, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean. Oceania is a semi-luxury cruiseline – not quite on par with the likes of Seabourn and Regent Seven Seas but a notch or two above most American and European mainstream oceanliners.

Tahiti Day #4: Kayaking, Swimming, Reading, & Relaxing at Our Villa While Dealing with Power Outage, Broken Oven, & Inoperable Dryer

After three days touring Tahiti Iti (Small Tahiti), Tahiti Nui (Big Tahiti), and the capital of Papeete, Mom and I stayed at our villa during our fourth and final day here before boarding our cruiseship tomorrow. Although we enjoyed kayaking, swimming, reading, and relaxing, we had to endure several problems in our rental property including a power outage, inoperable oven, and a broken clothes dryer.

Tahiti Day #3: Papeete

After two days driving all around Tahiti Iti (Small Tahiti) and Tahiti Nui (Big Tahiti), it was time to check out the capital city. Mom shopped for several hours at Papeete Market, we strolled along the waterfront, and I did a quick walking tour on our third day on the island before our cruise departs in two days.

Hotel Review: Park Pointe SFO
Falls Way Short of Its Promises

Mom and I are en route today to Tahiti, French Polynesia. We flew in yesterday from Orlando (MCO) and spent the night at Park Pointe Hotel just north of the airport. Park Pointe — transforming itself from its previous operation as Citigarden — makes many promises about its new experience, but it has a long way to go.

The Joy of Planning a French Polynesia Cruise in Which More than 3/4 of Tours are Sold Out

My blog is two weeks old, so I figure it’s time for my first rant – a part of lucas.travel I’m calling “Cranky Nomad.” These type of posts will be meant to illustrate the tribulations of life exploring the world without a fixed home – a place for me to vent; to share the less-glamorous aspects of my quest to visit all 234 countries, inhabited territories, and de-facto nations; and hopefully to do so in a semi-satirical way that makes me remember what I’m upset about is pretty small potatoes (i.e. #firstworldproblems). Today I’m infuriated at Oceania Cruises and annoyed at the difficulties of finding an affordable rental car on a remote tropical island.
