Hotel Review: Park Pointe SFO
Falls Way Short of Its Promises
SAN FRANCISCO — Mom and I are en route today to Tahiti, French Polynesia. We flew in yesterday from Orlando (MCO) and spent the night at Park Pointe Hotel just north of the airport. Park Pointe — transforming itself from its previous operation as Citigarden — makes many promises about its new experience, but it has a long way to go.
I booked this two-star property Jan. 27 on hotwire.com for the discount rate of $69 (plus $18.52 in taxes and fees = $87.52). The retail rate on Park Pointe’s website was $109 for a deluxe room with two double beds, so taking a mystery deal on Hotewire saved us $40 (37%). I prefer to stay at hotels with a minium rating of three stars, however these accommodations (even on bargain sites Hotwire and Priceline) were above my limit of $100 per night.
We arrived at Park Pointe late last night. We were originally assigned a room with only one bed in Building 1, but when I told the front-desk clerk we need two beds, we were given a room at the back of the property in Building 5 (Room 530). We had to drag our luggage for about three minutes outside in the cold (thankfully it had stopped raining) to reach our room.
The room itself was quite poor, even for a 2-star property. I laughed at the slogans painted on the building when our room lacked basics such as enough water pressure to take a shower.
Before I run through all the bads, I will note the shuttle service between the airport and motel ran smoothly, and it’s nice (and rare) that there’s a schedule posted on Park Pointe’s website so you know upon arrival when to go outside in the cold drizzle to look for the shuttle. And the WiFi was good for a motel, with a download speed of 18.3 Mbps and an upload speed of 3.06.
Now let’s take a look at the many items Park Pointe must improve on as it continues rebranding itself:
